What Is a No-Zone?

November 22, 2022 Truck Accidents

Semi-trucks are common on Nevada roads. These large, heavy-duty commercial vehicles are responsible for transporting goods throughout the state and the country. Despite their importance to our daily lives, large trucks can be very dangerous; collisions with these vehicles can be catastrophic and could warrant the need for a Las Vegas, Nevada injury attorney.

In particular, semi-trucks have very large blind spots that are also known as no-zones. If a passenger car is traveling in a truck’s no-zone, the driver would not be able to see it, heightening the risk of an accident. To avoid a serious collision, it is critical to avoid these no-zones and stay in the driver’s line of sight.

What Is a No-Zone?

Where Are the No-Zones on a Truck?

The average semi-truck has four no-zones or blind spots. If you find yourself near one of these large, heavy-duty vehicles, avoid the following areas:

  • Directly in Front of the Truck: Truck drivers cannot see vehicles that are traveling within the first 20 feet directly in front of the vehicle. If a driver is traveling in this area, a serious collision can occur, especially as trucks need more time to slow down and come to a stop.
  • Directly Behind the Truck: The second major no-zone is located directly behind a truck. Drivers cannot see at least 30 feet behind them, making it extremely dangerous to drive too close behind a truck. Make sure to leave more than 30 feet of space to avoid a collision.
  • The Left Side of the Cab: The left side of a semi-truck, extending from the driver’s door to the back of the truck, is also a major no-zone. If a passenger car is traveling directly next to a truck behind the driver’s mirror, he or she could be involved in a serious accident.
  • The Right Side of the Cab: Finally, motorists should avoid traveling on the right side of a truck extending from the truck driver’s door to the back of the vehicle. Truckers often are unable to see vehicles traveling in one or even two lanes to their right, making this area very dangerous.

Safety Tips for Driving Around Large Trucks

Driving around large trucks can be scary and very risky. If you find yourself near one of these vehicles on the road, keep the following tips in mind to reduce the risk of an accident:

  • Do not linger in the no-zones. Avoid them as much as possible and get out of the area quickly if you need to travel in a blind spot.
  • If you need to pass a truck, always pass on the left side. It is easier for drivers to see vehicles on the right than vehicles on the left.
  • Be extremely cautious before and when you pass a truck. Always make sure that you can see the driver in his or her side mirror before passing.
  • Always use your signals when passing a truck and allow the driver enough time to see you before making the maneuver.
  • After you pass a semi-truck, do not move directly in front of the vehicle. Make sure that you can see the entire truck in your rearview mirror before moving into the lane.

What to Do If You Are Injured in a Truck Accident

Truck accidents can happen at any time, in any place. If you were involved in one of these accidents, it is critical to call 911 and seek medical attention as soon as you can. After you receive treatment, contact a Las Vegas, NV truck accident lawyer to discuss your legal options and take your first steps toward financial recovery.
